Sunny 16 rule: on a bright sunny day, set aperture to f/16 and shutter speed to the reciprocal of ISO. Simple yet surprisingly accurate.

EV (Exposure Value) is a logarithmic scale where each stop corresponds to doubling or halving light. EV 0 = f/1.0 at 1 second.

Light polarization occurs by reflection off non-metallic surfaces at Brewster's angle. A polarizing filter eliminates reflections and increases color saturation.

💡 CPL filter: rotate to maximum at ~56° angle from glass. Loses ~1.5 EV of light.

Rayleigh's criterion defines the minimum angle to resolve two point sources. It is the limit of optical resolution for any lens.

Color Theory

Simultaneous contrast: a color appears different depending on surrounding colors. Gray on red background looks greenish and vice versa.

Chevreul's law: adjacent colors mutually shift toward their complementary color

Ansel Adams' Zone System divides the tonal range into 11 zones (0–X). Zone V = 18% gray, Zone 0 = absolute black, Zone X = pure white.

Each zone = 1 EV (double the light amount)
